HOW AL-AIN INTERNATIONAL EYE TRUST IS HELPING:

Dr. Irfan Kundi is the pioneer in Pakistan for the following eye surgical procedures/techniques:

Intacs for Keratoconus:

Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea bulges outward like a cone. This can cause progressive deterioration of vision.

Intacs is one of four intrastromal corneal ring segments systems (ICRS) which are meant to be inserted into corneal stoma with specific tools.  This is a standard latest surgical treatment for keratoconus. When they are inserted into the eye, Intacs reshape the cornea by flattening it closer to its original dome shape within a year time.

Phakic IOLs for High Myopia:

Phakic IOLs (intraocular lenses) are an alternative to LASIK and PRK eye surgery for correcting moderate to severe myopia (nearsightedness), and in some cases produce better and more predictable vision outcomes than laser refractive surgery.  These are Implantable lenses and are more suitable for correcting nearsightedness, particularly for individuals with high amounts of myopia or thinner-than-normal corneas that could increase their risk of complications from LASIK or other vision correction procedures. Phakic IOLs  work like contact lenses, except they are surgically placed within the eye and typically are permanent, which means no maintenance is needed except for the routine annual check up. Ophtec (www.ophtec.com) are virtually complications free iris-supported phakic IOLs which have no match in the world.

Scleroplasty:

To address myopia progression, an effective and reliable surgical technique is used, which is called Scleroplasty. It is aimed at reinforcement of sclera (outer layer of the eye) in pathologically changed segments. In the course of such surgical intervention, a specifically designed lyodura alloplants are inserted outside eye ball that is sclera, thus reinforcing the walls of the eye, suspending its growth behind the equator and myopia progression. Scleroplasty also contributes to expansion in the number of vessels that supply nourishment to the posterior pole of the eyeball, thus improving/supplementing the blood supply to the eye. This surgery takes 15-20 minutes and is performed under general anesthesia on the day basis.

Fugo Plasma Blade Technology:

The plasma blade, also known as the Fugo blade, is the first plasma ablation system that can create precise low-energy incisions on the ocular surface and within the human eye. Dr. Richard J. Fugo is the inventor of the Fugo Blade. It is recommended for capsulotomy, iridotomy and transciliary filtration. The Fugo Blade™ is a battery-powered electrosurgical device to perform anterior capsulotomy for cataract surgery, employing an incising filament as thick as a human hair. When the Fugo Blade came on the scene, Dr. Daljit Singh of Amritsar, India, revived the idea of filtering aqueous from the posterior chamber. He observed that the ablation ability of the plasma cloud column around the Fugo Blade tip created a non-cauterizing homeostasis when he performed surgery in bloody tissue, such as pupiloplasties and soft-tissue incisions. With this insight, Dr. Singh proceeded to develop the procedure that we now refer to as Singh Filtration or TCF or MTF. Dr. Singh has emphasized that the importance of this procedure lies in patient safety, low tissue surgical trauma, quick surgical time, easy revision of closed filters, a lack of anterior chamber collapse, no premature cataract formation (unlike conventional trabeculectomies), less postoperative chair time and a surgical-filtering procedure that all anterior-segment surgeons can perform in a comfortable fashion. It is a great tool for mass glaucoma surgery with in a limited time period at free eye camps meant for poor patients in 3rd world countries like Pakistan & India. Dr. Irfan Kundi is the only trained eye surgeon in Pakistan, performing all sorts of eye operations with this great tool in particular glaucoma filtration procedures.

War Injury Repair Center:

Dr. Kundi is the only surgeon in Pakistan and Afghanistan who is providing this comprehensive service to trauma patients injured in bomb blast and road traffic accidents. Retinal detachment (RD), corneal transplantation and oculo-plastic surgery etc. are performed in one sitting.

Free Eye Camps:

Our trust works to prevent blindness and restores sight by holding free eye camps in underserved communities. Camp costs £800. Provides gift of clear vision or eyesight to up to 800+ patients.

Spectacle & Drug Banks:

In many cases, all that is required to correct eyesight deficiency is a pair of glasses. Trust provides free glasses and drugs to deserving patients too.

Mother Child Care Campaignby Al-Ain International Eye Trust:

We have acquired vehicles, ambulances, Doppler ultrasonography scanners and expertise to run this campaign throughout Azad Kashmir and Pakistan. Dr Pervez Iqbal a consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist from Doncaster Royal Infirmary UK is visiting in March or April 2005 to conduct Free Mother 7 Child care camps at various towns including Chakswari and Chakwal. Poor women will be treated free of charge.

We are setting up a modern ICU (Intensive Care Unit) as well as a modern operating theater as well.We have already installed a latest Doppler Ultrasonography and Echocardiography scanners in order to set up modern Gynecological/Obstetrical and Cardiology units.

In the near future we will also provide a modern renal & liver dialysis facilities which will not exist any where in the town.

We also hope that we will set up a modern biochemical/immunological laboratory, microbiology lab in the near future.

Equipment loan:

We also distributed free imported crutches and Zimmer frames (walking sticks) to elderly and disabled patients at Chakswari AJK and Chakwal, Punjab, Pakistan. Besides that we have also donated two imported hospital beds to Chakswari Azad Kashmir branch to be used by chronically bedridden patients with urinary incontinence etc which we would like to have these returned to our charity which can be loaned to other deserving needy patients. In the future we would to donate similar medical equipment etc so that needy people can have maximum benefits from our charity.

Al-Ain Computer Academy:

We have set up a computer academy at the orphanage for boys at Sehgalabad, Chakwal, Punjab, Pakistan and God willing we have promised to equip a similar academy for girls at this orphanage in March 2005. We have a plan to set up similar Al-Ain computer academies at various underdeveloped districts and villages to promote computer sciences knowledge among our future generation. For all this we are thank ful to all the NHS hospitals and universities at UK who have generously donated these IT equipment and hope to get these equipment donated to our charity along with medical and other sports equipment only to be delivered to the deserving people at the third world countries.
